FAQ

What are the payment terms?

I do a project-based fee structure where you know exactly what you are getting in a clearly defined proposal. My expectation is for everything to be paid in advance so I can move forward with all the deliverables on my end. It’s simple and keeps things from getting confusing that way.

Can I pay on commission?

I do not work on commission. We can discuss payment options and work within your budget, but as a professional grant writer, it is seen as unethical and damaging to the trade to do commission. It is also not allowed as an expense in the grants that are written, so it could lead to compliance issues. As a client you receive a product and I have found that as clients invest in it, it comes out superior when that investment and commitment is upfront.

Can I pay by the hour?

I do not do hourly rates as I feel it leads to confusion and delay. I want you to know exactly what you are getting at what cost, even if it takes more hours on my end. In the end it is the finished product you receive that has value!

How long will it take to complete the funding strategy or grant?

The short answer is that it depends, but I would give yourself at least 4 weeks to build everything out. There is a lot of back and forth communication. I find that what takes time is defining the project’s scope and activities and engaging partners. I will try to move as fast as possible, but more often than not, you will find that it takes time on your end.

How do I get started?

Fill out the new client form. From there, I will get a notification and will either send you a complimentary work proposal or a 20min free consultation.

What types of organizations do you work with?

I am experienced in supporting start-ups and for-profits in accessing grants. I have vast experience in the agricultural sector including: ag research, agricultural projects, ag extension, etc. I have also worked with non-profits as well, but I find that they are not as limited in their ability to find and navigate the grant world.

What types of grants/proposals have you written?

I have written numerous federal and international grants, State grants, and foundation grants. I have also led and developed Private Public Partnership proposals and prepared high-impact agribusiness plans and partnership agreements.

Why use a grant writer?

While anyone can write, grant writing is a painful experience if you do not know how to organize and navigate your way through the journey. On the flip side, if you work with a solid grant writer, you can feel motivated and excited about the next grant. My goal is to make it a positive experience that gives teams the motivation to chase down more funding opportunities.

Client Testimonials

"Juan played a primary role in both organizing the material for the grant and writing the core content. He went above and beyond to help our client farmer to get a clear, solid and well thought through grant proposal. He is an important and valued colleague in our grant circle."

"Juan Whiting is currently supporting Planetary CARE as a grant writer. Juan recently worked with a client of ours, a land owner and a regen ag farmer in Arizona, to write a highly competitive and innovative grant proposal for the USDA's Partnership for Climate-smart Commodities grant. Being a 4th generation farmer with deep experience in managing large-scale organic and regenerative farming operations globally, Juan was an extremely valuable partner and grant writer for their grant proposal. We highly recommend Juan as a grant writer, particularly for grants that fund solutions to climate change and environmental degradation."
